Speaker : Enrico Palumbo (ISMB / EURECOM) Title : Innovation Diffusion: a (Big) Data-driven approach to the study of the geographic spreading of IT trends Abstract: In order to be appealing and successful, companies that offer technological services and consulting are required to keep up the pace with competitors and to be informed first about newly cutting-edge technologies. Relevant questions to this end are: are IT trends synchronous worldwide? Is a good time for investing in the USA necessarily a good time for investing in Europe? Is there a geographic diffusion process of IT trends? Popular tools such as the Gartner's Hype Cycle aim at identifying the temporal evolution of the maturity of new technologies, lack of geographic information, meaning that they do not consider the possible delay in the market demand among different countries. In this work, we propose a data-driven approach to the study of the geographic diffusion of Information Technology (IT) trends, focusing on the case-study of Big Data. We analyze and represent Google Trend data, which measure the amount of Google queries concerning a given topic, in a given time and in a given place, highlighting a propagating wave of interest that supports a diffusion model among countries. More in detail, we show that English speaking countries and Japan appear to be more responsive to the Big Data trend and that delays may reach values up to four years. Bio: Enrico Palumbo received a MSc in Physics of Complex Systems at the University of Turin in 2015, with a final grade of 110/110 and honors. During the MSc, he spends five months at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, thanks to the ERASMUS program. In parallel to his scientific formation, he attends the Scuola di Studi Superiori Ferdinando Rossi of the University of Turin, institution of excellence reserved to talented students. Enrico works as a Data Scientist at Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB), a research and innovation center operating in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain, located in Turin. In July, 2016, he will start his PhD in EURECOM under the supervision of Giuseppe Rizzo (ISMB) and Raphael Troncy (EURECOM). His research interests lie at the intersection between Semantics, Artificial Intelligence and Complexity and his PhD project concerns graph-based methods for the contextualization and personalization of entity linking systems in cross-media documents.
