Printers are indispensable part of any operational organization, so are the printing habits of the users of those organizations. At the same time, printers are the "secretaries" charged to handle even the most secret documents, even if those are strongly encrypted on their owner's PC/laptop/smartphone. Despite the fact that printers, after routers, form perhaps the second largest embedded-device population and at the same time is the embedded-device population second most integrated in a traditional computer&networks environments, their security has been overlooked for decades. In this presentation, I will give an overview backed with demos of the security findings of the last 2 years intensive research on various sub-systems, protocols, specifications and implementations forming the complex printing world. These findings will be put in the security context to better understand the complexities faced and to draw necessary conclusions and actions in order to secure this area of computing.
