On June 17th, 12 partners (a mix from industrial and academic partners, to which EURECOM belongs) from 7 European member countries celebrated the OCTAVE kick-off plenary meeting in Rome. This project will last 24 months with a budget of 4.41 million Euros. Founded under the challenge of "secure societies" of the 2020 EU program, the OCTAVE project will set up a system for voice authentication using innovative solutions. The system will overcome the complexity of using and managing passwords, and establish a system for access by both logical and physical control.

A EURECOM-Inria-Accenture team won the prize for the most innovative startup idea of the Hackathon #GreenGame

Congrats to Alberto Benegiamo (PhD student at EURECOM / Inria), Vincenzo Mastandrea (PhD student at Inria), Luca Schiatti (Accenture Labs, Sophia Antipolis), Flavio Toffalini (Master student, intern at EURECOM) and Paolo Viotti (PhD student at EURECOM) who won the prize for the most innovative startup idea of the Hackathon #GreenGame which was organized during May 29-30, 2015. The hackthon was about sustainability and green living, and it was focused on using the open data made available by different local public entities (e.g. the city of Nice, the province, etc).

The team won a prize which consists of two free enrollments for the European Innovation Academy.

The team presented the following project:

  • Typ! (That's Your Place!) allows everyone to find the perfect neighborhood to live in a given area. Users can specify several kinds of preferences or needs. For example, they may wish to live close to a bus stop or a swimming pool or rather live away from a park containing trees which cause allergies. Typ! will therefore highlight on a map different neighborhoods of the city suggesting the most suited to the users.
  • Typ! is a possible application built on top of Erdös, the data aggregation and analytic platform we envision to extract value from the open data generated by public administrations. The Erdös platform will be able to classify thematically open data which are today scattered among different institutions and are not standardized. Erdös will allow policy makers to extend and coordinate the breadth of their actions by searching and discovering new patterns, getting access to clean, well-organized information.

On 2 June in Sophia Antipolis, was held a press conference organized by Com4Innov and its partner Ericsson, with several demonstrations on two innovative subjects: WIFI Calling (Voice over LTE call on WiFi) and Internet of Things (IoT). The WIFI Calling is a technical feat that is also the first in France!

As a demonstration, Christian BONNET, Professor at EURECOM, presented new information sharing means for applications such as Crowd Sourcing, home automation and remote monitoring: eg: Lightweight Gateway, where the smartphone becomes a smart object.

The purpose of the Alumni Conference is to bring a large number of alumni together for a mixture of informative and fun activities. The keyword here is networking, EURECOM’s major strength. After 23 years the EURECOM community now includes more than 2,000 alumni from its master and PhD programs.

Staying in touch is an essential part of the EURECOM experience, maybe even more than the formal educational. In order to frame this well, the organizing committee is composing a very interesting program with talks by distinguished alumni and EURECOM's top faculty as well as a friendly social event.

UCN@SOPHIA organizes a scientific day for presenting the Labex PhD research activities on April 24, in the SophiaTech campus (Amphitheater in Forum building).

The objective of this day is to give an overview of the UCN@Sophia research activities, focused on telecommunication networks and their evolutions, and to make it possible for students and researchers to discuss their work and approaches in this area.
This day will allow everyone to discover the scientific work in the Labex through presentations and posters. This is also an opportunity to support our young researchers. That's why several EURECOM PhD students also propose topics on this day:
Florian Lugou"Security analysis for communicating devices"Sosina-Mengistu Gashaw: "Understanding and modeling mobility characteristics of scooters and motorcycles for user-centric ITS apps", Luigi Vigneri: "Vehicles as a mobile cloud", Xiwen Jiang: "Exploiting channel reciprocity in massive MIMO", et Alberto Benegiamo: "Mathematical tools for smart-grids".

Go support them!
